Meet Your Teachers!

Mrs. Emery

I grew up in Ocala, Fl and went to college at Florida State University. In July of 2006 my husband and I moved to Portland, OR. I love it out here in the Northwest, it’s great!

I am an avid knitter/crotcher/needle point enthusiast! I’ll always have a project that’s easy to take with me wherever I go, in case I get a few spare minutes.

If I’m not knitting, I’m gardening, cooking, reading, or writing. My favorite book(s) has to be the series “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. My husband and I love to go for bike rides, play in the snow when there’s some available, and go to farmer’s markets around Portland. We play traditional Irish music; he plays guitar and flute, and I play fiddle. We both study jujitsu, which is the stuff you see in the UFC without the punching part. It’s a lot of fun to be the only woman and hold my own against the guys!

My husband and I are also both CrossFit Certified Trainers. We work as personal trainers at our local CrossFit gym. I love weightlifting and have started Olympic Weightlifting. So much fun!

Mrs. McHugh

I’ve been teaching for FLVS for the last six years, which makes me a dinosaur in the land of online education. Two of my children don’t remember any other “life” than having a work-at-home Mom with a phone headset on her head all day. Prior to FLVS, I taught in traditional schools for nine years. When I start to add up those years of teaching, I think more about the thousands of students I have been able to work with over time (probably around 4,500 by now.) Since day one of my teaching career, I’ve never doubted my choice to be an educator.

In my spare time (haha) I love to be on the water. Sailing, fishing, lobstering, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m also a rabid Gator fan, particularly when it involves football. On any given Saturday during college football season, I’m either at the soccer fields with my kids, or watching football. Many Fall weekends find us in Gainesville.
My family includes two boys, ages ten and seven, and a daughter, age two. My husband and I have been married for 13 years, and live in the same town we grew up in (Ft. Myers.)
